Photoshop Evaluation

OUGD102

For the brief I wanted to keep the back of the 10 A6 postcards simple, with lines for the address, some rectangular shape to place the stamp, a divider in the middle with the pantone colour code with a swatch of that colour.

The reason I wanted to put a colour swatch on the back was because from most of my photographs based on green you can see many different shades/ tones of green so I wanted to instruct which colour I was looking at.

From my photographs I noticed a lot of the composition of them were in the centre, I didn’t really want them all straight on so I considered the scale and how the image would sit on the rectangular A6 shape.

As we had to consider elements of what Photoshop can offer, I decided under the influence of the Detonate club flyers from Nottingham I wanted to use one shape and repeat it in different directions to break the image up, using interesting compositions of the photographs.

I decided to use the arrow shape as I think that green as a symbols offers people directions for information for example a fire exit and it instructs people where to leave and first aid kits, where to locate them.

I tried to create a layout using arrows in different directions with the green photographs showing from the other side. The arrows however I felt showed to much negative space of white, compared to the look I wanted to go for from detonate influence flyers. From some reason as well it reminds me of dads army, at the start when it shows all the British and German arrows invading each other. It properly doesn’t help, as the photographs were green.

If I were to change anything it would be the shapes and layout, I would rather hand draw them out and then scan them in to trace. I feel using the arrows set on Photoshop limited myself, and I would also make the arrows closer together. I really like to composition of five of the photographs but some I wasn’t to sure on until I printed maybe I should of revisited the camera and took some of the photos again?

Video Elective Evaluation

At the start it took us a while as a group to find a song that we would all enjoy working with to produce visuals for. We left the music decision late, but finally all agreed that Brian’s friend Dan would be suitable to work with. Dan is part of a blues band who plays at gigs quiet often. Because we had Dan we decided we would experiment with the green screen.

We shot the six minute green screen with Dan on from two angles, a medium-long shot and a side view. Because of the nature of the song we decided to base the idea of the film on the less attractive scenes around and in Leeds. The scenes and music would relate to that acoustic homeless person feels.

Separately we went around Leeds to shoot less attractive shots of the city, I based my clips around the more out of town shots, urban. This included abandoned homes, graffiti and rubbish.

When editing the video we all decided what effects and outcome we wanted to gain. The outcome was for the film to be either black and white or a sepia look, with Dan slowly fading in and our shots with the city’s depressing scenes slowly moving in and out using the different opacity.

The music track actually goes on for six minutes so we decided to cut it down to just gone over two minutes as we felt that would be enough time to communicate our idea.

At first I tried to edit the video. The first problem I occurred was transferring the tape in a cassette player because I had handed the camera in. This was a slow process but finally I moved it onto the Mac ready to edit. When I inserted the CD, the audio saved to iTunes, but when I tried to use it in Final Cut, it refused to open it, as it was not in the mp3 format. So I decided for the time being to use the audio captured from the green screen session (which was heavily distorted because we didn’t consider the audio at the time). I then put the scenes of what we captured around Leeds into and order to play with the music and put a grain filter on it and changed the levels to darken the clips to give it that depressing feel.

When I tried to use the footage captured on green screen I realised that we had never set the colour balance so when I tried to select the dark green of the screen it became pixalated and started the take away part of Dan’s jacket and hat. After talking to Brian he said that you could change the colours so it would be brighter and Brian had ago at this and it ended up working really well.

From making this video I learnt to always set the colour balance, use a tripod to get smoother shots and gained experience that I never knew before the music video in Final Cut.

Illustrator A1 Alphabet

This was the first time i had actually sat down and used illustrator, it was a whole new program i had to learn. I thought compared to photoshop it was hard to get used to because of the locking of the layers, and how to save to document correctly. I picked up on quite a few other tips, like what document i need to use for a certain item. I think now that i should be able to use the program but there are parts that i would be unsure on but if i don't know how to do something i would just ask for help. My final A1 sheet wasn't to visually exciting but i am happy to look at it for progress.

No news is good news Friday 20th November

Notes
Always put senders address on letter/envelope
Never take work out before you try talking to the client
Don't get wound up about work you are meant to enjoy it
When i had to present the work i had done to the Graphic Designer (forgot his name) i was really nervous because i didn't know what he will think of it ect. However when I showed him my three posters based upon Going Green, i didn't really feel to happy with them, i think it was because it didn't reflect me and myself couldn't find them visually interesting. However when I turned them over the designer said he could remember them on the wall and thought they were really good but i said i didn't really like them and he responded well the brief was to create three high impact posters to communicate a message and yours do exactly that and nothing else so its clear and straight to the point. I felt this feedback was really appreciated coming from someone who has worked in industry for a number of years. Then when i showed him the mail shot he seemed really pleased with that but he said next time find out how you can get the air fresheners cut by machine to make it look that more professional I agreed and will need to learn within year one where and what all the resources offer.

What?
Make families more aware how to save energy when using cars.

Why?
From Research families are a big contributor towards emissions with their big cars and could do something that the children will understand and ask there parents why havent you checked the air pressure of the tyres for example.

How?
To instruct families and their children how to save energy using instructions

Who?
Young Families that use large cars.

To inform families how they could save energy by instructing them.
Useful tips checklist.

Pull out instructions with an air freshener.

Colour Stock?
Same as before because they had impact and relates to the subject matter.

Poster Evaluation Number 2

What statement /fact/ question is being communicated to you?
The message seems to be reducing car emissions? Shown through black clouds and green clouds giving off different amounts of carbon.

Is this being communicated in a clear and focused way?
Unsure

What could you develop further?
The text poster with just green doesn't communicate. The other 2 posters represent it with cars but text poster is possibly a little vague in how to go green

Have the posters been kept simple and to the point?
Yes

Is a statement fact or question being posed?
The statement is being personally directed at the viewer. Its informing you to do something but in the two image based posters how are you supposed to change a car. Is it about the LPG conversions (haven't a clue what that means)

Has the restriction of the two colours plus been met?
Yes

Are the two colours plus stock appropriate to the solution?
Yes

Why are the two colours appropriate/inappropriate?
The colour is a direct link to the message being communicated and makes the poster stand out.

Do the posters work as a set or a series?
Unsure

Why do they work/don't work as part of a set or series and could this be developed further?
The two with text do, the image based only does stand out a little probably because the amount of the cars co2 has change and is a different composition on the hill.

Is it clearly evident which poster is TYPE, IMAGE and TYPE & IMAGE?
Yes very easily recognisable

Are the posters memorable immediate high impact and clear?
The are because of the bold impact of colour. The stand out and are very easy to read, although doesn't instruct the viewer as much as they could. If its about making cars more environmentally friendly the message doesn't run through the set.

Do you feel the brief has been fulfilled to it's full potential?
Unsure

Further feedback...
The statement go green now is fine but the posters doesn't say how or really inform the viewer as much as posters of this theme should. Just need the message clearer. If its about car usage could have a green bike and a black polluting car?
